Keep Your Nuts Tight

Here’s an interesting video showing the locking effectiveness of several different locking techniques using a very intense vibration apparatus. As expected the nut with no washer fails very quickly, as does a nut with a standard washer. Some surprises come with split washers and Nyloc nuts, and the effectiveness of doubling up nuts is called into question.

That’s pretty cool. The nylon nuts put up a good fight. After initially loosening, it seemed to reach a point where it kept the bolt from going anywhere while the machine just shook the bolt back and forth. Even though it was loose, it wasn’t going to catastrophically fall apart.

Good presentation.

This is great and all, but I can’t go down to Lowes or whatever and buy Nordlocks. It’s a great technology that would be greatly beneficial in many places, but costs and availability are important, too.

At the same time, if you need absolute strength do you really trust a Lowes bolt to keep you safe? There comes a time when upgrading to Fastenal or other “premium” hardware suppliers is worth the shipping time and expense.

Nordlocks aren’t really about strength, though. I’d be just fine with a Lowe’s bolt, or more likely, Ace Hardware, since they have a better selection. It’s about not coming undone from vibration.

I actually appreciate being reminded about Nordlocks, cause I need to solve an issue with my whiteline swaybar endlinks, the nylock nut keeps coming undone. I was going to drill and lockwire or cotter pin them, but Nordlocks will work much better.

Neat. Never seen this video or knew what they were called, but Mercedes uses them for some applications, typically suspension components.

Hmm-didn’t see it say anything about proper bolt stretch.

Do tell, I’m curious. I assume bolts stretch a given amount under stress?

Yes. Grade 5 means grade 5, does it not? A Fastenal grade 8 bolt shouldn’t be significantly different than one from ace hardware

You’re not wrong, the real problem is finding the size, grade and finish you want/need at most stores!

Finding a bolt with a proper grip length is pretty much impossible outside of places like fastenal.
